There has lately been a renewed interest in Riboflavin owing to insight into its recognition as an essential component of cellular biochemistry. The knowledge of the mechanisms and regulation of intestinal absorption of riboflavin and its health implications has significantly been expanded in recent years. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the importance of riboflavin, its absorption and metabolism in health and diseased conditions, its deficiency and its association with various health diseases, and metabolic disorders. Efforts have been made to review the available information in literature on the relationship between riboflavin and various clinical abnormalities. The role of riboflavin has also been dealt in the prevention of a wide array of health diseases like migraine, anemia, cancer, hyperglycemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and oxidative stress directly or indirectly. The riboflavin deficiency has profound effect on iron absorption, metabolism of tryptophan, mitochondrial dysfunction, gastrointestinal tract, brain dysfunction, and metabolism of other vitamins as well as is associated with skin disorders. Toxicological and photosensitizing properties of riboflavin make it suitable for biological use, such as virus inactivation, excellent photosensitizer, and promising adjuvant in chemo radiotherapy in cancer treatment. A number of recent studies have indicated and highlighted the cellular processes and biological effects associated with riboflavin supplementation in metabolic diseases. Overall, a deeper understanding of these emerging roles of riboflavin intake is essential to design better therapies for future.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a collision free MAC protocol for wireless networks with smart antennas that provides proportional service differentiation to various classes of traffic based on their respective bandwidth demand. The proposed protocol works for diverse physical parameters such as number of interfaces at each node, number of communication frequencies, and antenna beamwidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that provides link layer differentiated services for wireless networks with smart antennas and explores the influence of the physical parameters and network topology on the performance of the MAC layer. Ashish Deopura received his B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, in 2003, and he received his M.S. degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, in 2005. He currently works as a Modeling Engineer for OPNET Technologies located in Bethesda, MD Professor Aura Ganz is the director of the Multimedia Networking Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has authored more than 170 journal and conference papers in the areas of multimedia wireless networks, ubiquitous computing, telemedicine, and security. She is a co-author of the book: “Multimedia Wireless Networks”, Prentice Hall, 2003. Some of her recent assignments include: general co-chair of the IEEE UWBNETS workshop, general co-chair of the IEEE BROADMED workshop, general co-chair of the Massachusetts 3rd Annual R&D Conference, keynote speaker at the NSF sponsored workshop in Mobile Computing, and invited speaker at Personal and Local Wireless Network Solutions conference, and Motorola’s Wireless Communications Futures Forum, Wireless Local Area Networks Conference. Colloidal silver is observed to affect the transmittance of p-type Cd1−y Zn y Te (CZT) single-crystal substrate material at room temperature. The optical transmittance spectra have been analyzed in the near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) regions. The transmittance characteristics of CZT showed significant reduction in absorption due to split-off valance band transitions in the NIR region and intervalence band absorption in the MIR region upon coating CZT substrates with silver paste. This reduction in absorption has been explained to be due to the compensation of the acceptor defects (native and foreign). Silver atoms incorporated from the silver coating help in compensation of these defects. A similar effect on transmittance characteristics of mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) epilayers grown on CZT substrates after coating silver paste on the CZT substrate side was also observed. An improvement in the transmittance of CZT substrates after the application of silver paste was observed. A similar improvement in transmittance is usually achieved by annealing the substrates in a Cd/Zn atmosphere. The results are explained by considering the formation of neutral complexes of acceptors (cadmium vacancies) and the interstitial silver. This study also points to the important conclusion that silver paste on CZT should be applied with caution for measurement purposes since it diffuses even at room temperature and modifies the optical characteristics.  相似文献

Accurate component modeling is a key factor to successful wireline and wireless circuit design in Si/SiGe BiCMOS and RF CMOS. This article presents the application of two planar electromagnetic simulation methods for reducing the memory and computation time requirement for accurate simulation of inductors fabricated with thick analog metal layers. First, a conformal subsectioning technique is briefly discussed in the context of reducing the numerical complexity of octagonal and circular spiral inductor analysis. Second, this article discusses a method for determining if more than a two-sheet model of thick metals is needed for accurate inductor simulation. Finally, the conformal mesh is applied to a 3.3-nH inductor fabricated using the IBM 0.13-/spl mu/m RF CMOS process technology. The simulated and measured results are compared.  相似文献

During the past decade, there have been significant improvements in remote sensing technologies, which have provided high‐resolution data at shorter time intervals. Considerable effort has been directed towards developing new classification strategies for analysing this imagery, but the use of artificial intelligence‐based analysis techniques has been somewhat limited. The aim of this study was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN)‐based technique for the classification of multispectral aerial images for land use in agricultural and environmental applications. The specific land‐use classes included water, forest, and several types of agricultural fields. Multispectral images at a 1‐m resolution were obtained for the state of Georgia, USA from a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data clearinghouse. These false‐colour images contained green, red and infrared true‐colour information. Three approaches were used for the preparation of the inputs to the ANN. These included histograms of the pixel intensities, textural parameters extracted from the image, and matrices of the pixels for spatial information. A probabilistic neural network was used. Seven hundred images were used for model development and 175 for independent model evaluation. The overall accuracy for the evaluation data set was 74% for the histogram approach, 71% for the spatial approach and 89% for the textural approach. The evaluation of ANNs based on various combinations of all three approaches did not show an improvement in accuracy. We also found that some approaches could be used selectively for certain classes. For example, the textural approach worked best for forest classes. For future studies, edge detection prior to classification, with more careful selection of each class, should be included for land‐use classification of multispectral images.  相似文献

The article presents the method of finding the complete equivalent circuit of two waveguides with coplanar axes coupled through a centered inclined slot in the common broad wall. The variational method based on dyadic Green's function is used for finding the parameters of the equivalent circuit. A cosinusoidal aperture field distribution is assumed. Considerable mathematical simplification is resulted from replacing the centered inclined slot by an equivalent magnetic dipole. Coupling slot characteristics are deduced, including resonant length, dominant mode scattering in both the waveguides. Numerical and experimental results for resonant lengths and scattering parameters are presented over a range of tilt angles, frequencies, and waveguide dimensions. Fretting corrosion is one of the important reasons for the failure of prosthesis made of titanium and titanium alloys under in vivo condition. The fretting-corrosion behaviour of untreated, anodized and thermally oxidized commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) in Ringer's solution was evaluated based on the change in free corrosion potential (FCP) measured as a function of time. A comparison of the performance of untreated, anodized and thermally oxidized CP-Ti under fretting-corrosion conditions is reported for the first time in this paper. The study reveals that surface modification of CP-Ti by both anodizing and thermal oxidation improved the fretting-corrosion resistance of CP-Ti and among them the performance of thermally oxidized CP-Ti is superior to that of the anodized one. Adhesive galling is the predominant wear mechanism for untreated CP-Ti, adhesive wear and delamination are found to be operative for anodized CP-Ti whereas an abrasive wear mechanism is operative for thermally oxidized CP-Ti when they are fretted against an alumina ball.  相似文献

Middle ear effusion has been considered the most common cause of vestibular disturbance in children. However, there have been only a few studies on vestibular disturbance in children with otitis media with effusion. We studied the vestibular systems of 30 children with otitis media with effusion aged 8 to 13 years and compared the results with 15 age- and sex-matched controls. A questionnaire relating to vestibular disturbance was given to patients and their parents. Spontaneous nystagmus and positional nystagmus were recorded by electronystagmography as diagnostic tests of the vestibular system. Romberg's and past-pointing tests were performed on children with otitis media with effusion and controls. After vestibular tests were completed, myringotomy was performed, and a ventilation tube was inserted. The questionnaire and the vestibular tests were repeated after the operation and during the first month after surgery. Our study showed that there was a history of vestibular disturbance in 33% of children with otitis media with effusion. Electronystagmography and Romberg's test findings demonstrated that 33% of the children had vestibular dysfunction (p < 0.05). After myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion, vestibular test results returned to normal, and symptoms related to vestibular disturbance improved. These findings confirm the assumption that middle ear effusion may affect the vestibular system, which can be resolved after myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion.  相似文献
